HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High’s volleyball team packed plenty of victories into a busy Saturday.
The Lady Cubs went 4-1 in the Humboldt B&W Tournament, falling only to eventual runner-up Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan in the semifinals.
Aside from that setback, Humboldt won in straight sets over Altoona-Midway, Marais des Cygne Valley (twice, including the third-place match), Yates Center and Marmaton Valley.
“I am very happy with the results,” Humboldt head coach Stephanie Splechter said. “We wanted a shot at the championship, but just didn’t play with enough confidence against Colgan. We get better with every match.”
Colgan lost in the championship match to Waverly. Marais des Cygne Valley took fourth.
Marmaton Valley went 2-2 on the day, defeating Yates Center, 25-17, 22-25, 28-26, and Altoona-Midway, 25-8, 25-14.
In addition to the loss to Humboldt, Marmaton Valley also lost to Marais des Cygne Valley, 25-22, 25-17.
Marmaton Valley played without the services of setter Kaysha Elmenhorst, who missed the tournament because of a schedule conflict.
“We made some adjustments, but we just didn’t havea whole lot of energy,” head coach Terra Kegler said.
