The Humboldt Middle School Lady Cubs hope to keep their momentum after taking two of three contests from Cherryvale Thursday.
The A-Team represented Humboldt’s only loss, after falling to Cherryvale 27-15, but the B-Team and C-Team wrapped up the week with 16-12 and 10-8 wins respectively.
“Our B and C teams did a really good job of executing on the offensive end to get some easy shot attempts,” HMS coach Mike Miller said. “Our defensive effort was great in both of those games.”
In A-Team action, The Lady Cubs suffered from a slow start and played catch-up through the final whistle following a 12-4 Cherryvale run in the first quarter.
Quinn Miller had a team-leading 5 points, followed by Zoey Sanchez with 4 points. Mylan Sterling, Rhys Trieber and Hadlee Allen had a bucket each.
Sanchez had a team-leading seven rebounds, followed by Miller’s five boards and Allen’s four boards. Miller also had four steals, followed by Allen and Sanchez with three steals each.
“In the A game, we really struggled to put the ball in the basket,” Coach Miller said. “We dug ourselves a hole early and just couldn’t get over the hump after cutting it to five early in the second half. I thought our defense was much better in the second half which allowed us to get back in it.”
The C-Team opened with a win after ending the first quarter with a 4-2, then fighting off a Cherryvale rally to hold on for the 10-8 win.
Azahlynn Wilkerson had a team-leading 4 points, followed by Azzy Miller, Aubree Trim and Zoey Hess with a bucket each.
Wilkerson also had three steals. Hess led the Lady Cubs in rebounds with seven boards, followed by Trim and Brinley Gean with two boards each.
Following the C-Team’s lead, the B-Team picked up a 16-12 win by slowly building their lead from the first whistle.
They ended the first quarter on a 4-0 run, then added another 6 points to take a 10-3 lead into halftime. Cherryvale rallied with 8 points in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit.
Lucy Galloway and Hess tied for the team lead in scoring with 4 points each. Miller, Gean, Watson and Wilkerson had a bucket each.
Galloway also had a team-leading five rebounds, ahead of Trim and Brooklyn Watson, who had two boards each. Watson led the Lady Cubs in assists with two. Miller had a team-leading five steals.
