HAYS — The Southern Coffey County High Lady Titans’ state run came to an end Friday with three tough losses.
The matches came during the preliminary round of the Class 1A, Division II state volleyball tournament. The Lady Titans fell in two sets to Argonia, 25-22, 25-19, and Wilson, 25-11, 25-8.
Southern Coffey County picked up its first set win on the day, but could not pick up another in a 2-1 loss to Weskan, 22-25, 25-17, 25-23.
“Even thought we lost all three matches, I was proud of how the girls competed,” Lady Titan head coach Jeff True said. “We came out against Argonia in the first match and played well. Our passing and serving percentages hurt us, but we had our chances at the end of both sets.
“Against Wilson, we could never get any momentum,” True continued. “Their attacks were strong, and it really kept us on our heels.”
The Lady Titans rebounded with their strongest play of the tournament against Weskan. “Just like the first match, we came up a little short in the third set,” True said. “The entire week was a positive experience for the girls. We had tremendous fan support in Hays from our parents. We will miss our five seniors next season, but we have a good, young group of underclassmen who are waiting to step up.”
Sarah Webb, whose high school career ended in Hays, capped her year by being named to the all-tournament team. She delivered 33 kills on the day. Breanna Isch had 16 kills and 13 blocks.
Carly Nelson and Martyna Hegwald split the setting duties. Each recorded 19 assists.
Webb, Martyna and Myranda Hegwald, Nelson and Chelsea Snovelle are outgoing seniors.
The Lady Titans ended the season with a 16-20 record.
