LE ROY — Lebo High’s defense created the same headaches Friday that have plagued Southern Coffey County High’s girls this season.
The Wolves effectively harassed SCC’s guards and post players through a stifling full-court press in the first half, limiting SCC to 12 points, and way too many turnovers.
But it came at a cost — in fouls.
With Lebo’s post players in foul trouble, the Wolves had to abandon the press in the third quarter.
The Lady Titans responded with a 13-4 run to put SCC on top, 25-22.
Things got close in the end, but Southern Coffey County’s three post players, Brittne Brite, Miranda Alumbaugh and Breanna Isch took over. The trio accounted for 10 of SCC’s 13 points down the stretch in a 35-34 victory.
The win evens the Lady Titans’ record at 3-3 on the season as they head into the Christmas break.
“We’re still not where we want to be in breaking the press,” Lady Titan head coach Jeff True said. “But we’re getting close. The girls played hard. With the exception of the turnovers, we’re getting there.”
Southern Coffey County won despite hitting only two field goals in the fourth quarter and nine overall.
The Lady Titans were 17 of 33 from the stripe, including 6 of 12 in the fourth quarter.
“We hit more free throws than we missed, but we need to do better,” True said.
Lebo used its press to race to an 11-4 lead after one quarter. Deal’s 3-point play early in the second period kick-started SCC’s offense. The Lady Titans closed to within 18-12 at intermission.
Alumbaugh wound up with eight points to lead the way, followed by Brite, Isch and Kalyn Deal with seven apiece.
Whitney Sloan led Lebo with 12 points.
