CHETOPA — The final score was disappointing, but Crest High’s effort was not.
Lancer head coach Travis Hermreck reflected on the season-ending 59-34 loss to Chetopa in Saturday’s Class 1A-II substate championship game.
“We are disappointed it’s over, but I am very proud of this crew,” Hermreck said. “Two weeks ago, right after our sixth straight loss, I put a challenge to the guys. They could’ve folded and just went through the motions, but they didn’t. They gave me everything they had, and finished the way it was supposed to be done.”
Cheotpa broke a 14-14 deadlock by outscoring Crest 18-4 in the second period.
“We put a scare into them the first half, but our shots ran dry,” he said. “You can’t shoot 30 percent from the field and beat a team like that.”
The score was in the Hornets’ favor, 51-25, after three.
“Chetopa is a good team,” Hermreck said. “They will represent our league well at Hays.”
Brock Ellis ended his high school career with 15 points, 11 rebounds and two assists. Austin Green chipped in with nine points, three assists and two steals.
Brice Riddle poured in 24 points to lead Chetopa. Austen Sanders added 19 and Sherrick Rogers had 11.
ELSEWHERE, the Crest High girls also saw their season come to an end.
The Lady Lancers dropped a 52-23 decision to top seed Argonia in the Class 1A-II substate championship.
The Titans dropped a 65-42 decision to top seed Marais des Cygnes Valley in their 1A-I substate title game.
Further details from the game were unavailable at press time.
