PLEASANTON — Crest High’s Lancers and Humboldt High’s Cubs rang up victories Saturday afternoon as basketball action concluded in the 2011 Pleasanton High Blu-Jay Mid-Season Tournament.
The Lancers claimed third place with a 51-33 win over Prairie View High’s Buffalos. The Cubs won the fifth-place contest at the expense of Uniontown High’s Eagles, 47-33.
Central Heights captured the tournament championship with a 67-38 win over Jayhawk-Linn. Host Pleasanton finished eighth, losing 53-39 to Altoona-Midway.
Crest 51, Prairie View 33
The Lancers came out strong, leading 15-8 at the end of the first quarter, and 28-13 at halftime.
“I was really proud of how the boys bounced back after Friday’s loss,” said Travis Hermreck, Crest head coach. “I thought this win said more about our character than any other point of this season.”
Jordan Morton drilled three three-field goals on his way to 16 points for Crest. Kyle Hammond scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds plus dished out five assists.
Dexter Wiley and Luke Decker each had three steals. The Lancers were 10 of 16 from the free-throw line.
Prairie View was led by Jay Hoyt with 12 points and Taylor Brown with 10. The Buffalos were 3 of 4 on free throw attempts.
Humboldt 47, Uniontown 33
In a close first half, the Cubs used a 10-7 run in the first quarter to take the lead. Humboldt was up 19-16 at halftime. Humboldt outscored Uniontown 12-7 in the third period and finished with a 16-10 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Noah Thornburgh, a 6-5 post player, controlled the inside for Humboldt, scoring 24 points and pulling down 20 rebounds. Thornburgh sank 6 of 13 free throws. Tanner McNutt added 11 points.
“Noah dominated inside and our kids did a good job making entry passes to him. We played very unselfish basketball and played really well,” said David Taylor, Cubs’ head coach. He also pointed to only 14 turnovers by the Cubs as a key to the win.
Zach Travis, who hit two threes, paced the Eagles with 15 points. Brenton Esslinger had 10 points. The Eagles were 9 of 17 from the free-throw line.
