MOUND CITY — Crest High’s boys had the hot shooting hand early against host Jayhawk-Linn High.
The Lancers hit several three-pointers to open a 16-5 lead.
But the key to Crest’s 42-26 win, according to head coach Travis Hermreck, was the squad’s ability to overcome Jayhawk-Linn’s decided height advantage.
“We did a really good job after the second quarter of shutting down the Sunderland kid,” Hermreck said, referring to Kevin Sunderland, who led the Jayhawks with nine points.
Crest’s early advantage was largely wiped away in the second period as Jayhawk-Linn closed to with six, 19-13, by the break.
“We hit several three pointers early, but we quit hitting them in the second period,” Hermreck said. “So we started shooting them faster, which let them back into the game. Once we got settled down, we started playing better.”
Kyle Hammond led the Lancers with 15 points.
The Lancers drained 20 of 27 free throws, compared to Jayhawk-Linn’s 8 of 17.
Crest travels to Humboldt on Tuesday for a preseason tournament, playing Erie.
