WICHITA — Crest High’s Hanna Schmidt and Marmaton Valley High’s Brayden Lawson picked up some hardware Friday morning.
Schmidt, a sophomore, took fourth place in the girls Class 1A long jump at the state track meet, with a distance of 16 feet, 8.75 inches, while Lawson, a senior, ended his decorated high school career with a fifth-place medal in the 1A boys javelin with a top throw of 167’10”.
The medals were part of a frenetic day at Wichita State’s Cessna Stadium.
Iola High’s Mahalie Genoble narrowly missed out on being guaranteed a medal in the Class 3A girls 300-meter hurdles.
Genoble, a junior, finished with a time of 48.07 seconds, to finish 10th, or .13 seconds out of a top-eight qualifying position. (All eight who qualify for finals are guaranteed a state medal.)
Humboldt High senior Trevion Franklin came agonizingly close to qualifying for the finals in the 3A boys 200-meter dash. His time of 22.68 seconds was .02 slower than the final qualifying spot. Franklin will get another shot at a medal when he competes in the 100-meter dash.
