Kaden Macha, who has already shown his talent on the gridiron and in the gym, now will begin his ascent through par 4s. The avid golfer has verbally committed to attend the University of Central Missouri — a Division II powerhouse that placed fourth at the NCAA Championships last season.
“I liked the facilities, I liked the coach and they’re a winning program,” Macha said of the Warrensburg-based school. Tim Poe, UCM’s coach, had been recruiting Macha this past year or so.
Doug Kerr, who has coached Macha on Iola’s football and golf teams, is proud of him.
“It’s a great opportunity for him,” Kerr said. “I think people may have a misconception of Division I and Division II. Golf is golf — it’s an individual sport. Now, it determines where the tournaments he’s playing are at.”
This year’s golf team is made up of five members: Macha, Adam Peterson, Shane Walden, Matt Jacobs and Drake Dieker. While Macha has had success individually — he won the Class 4A individual title during his sophomore season — Macha said the team’s goal is to win state.
“I’d like to have a good senior year, obviously,” Macha said. “Hopefully I play well and peak at the right time.”
It helps that each golfer on the team has plenty of experience.
“We’ve got five players, five captains,” Macha said.
Kerr noted that Macha’s role on the team is different than in years past.
“I think his role this year has changed a little bit because he’s got that state title individually, now he will be looking for that team title,” Kerr said. “I think he’s going to drive himself pretty hard this year for that goal.”
Last season, Macha finished 22nd at the state tournament.
Regardless of his or the team’s finish, it appears Macha will be heading to a good school.
“He’s going to be playing with some great golfers from around the country,” Kerr said. “I think it’s the best fit for him sizewise and academically. Everything I read about the program is it’s a great program. We’re excited for him to play at the next level.”
Iola’s golf season begins on April 9 at Independence for the varsity team.
