COLONY — While Crest girls head coach Ben Vaughn thought his team played well on defense, it wasn’t enough to stifle the Madison High Lady Bulldogs Tuesday evening.
They lost the contest 40-22, after Madison unleashed some tough-to-defend shots from the outside.
“We were making them take tough shots, and they were making them,” Vaughn said. “What else can you do?”
The Bulldogs hit the ground running in the first quarter, putting a 10-0 run on the Lancers before the quarter ended at 12-2. The second quarter seemed just as rough.
A 3-pointer from Madison’s Kortnie Harrison, along with a long 2-pointer from Lindsey Buster added to the visiting team’s lead, 19-2 with six minutes remaining in the half.
Kurston Gilliland ended the drought with a free throw, followed by a two-pointer from Brytton Strickler. Brooklyn LaCross hit another two, followed by additional free throws from Gilliland. The Lancers had suffered what seemed to be an insurmountable lead gained by their opponent, however, and the scoreboard read 26-10 at the half.
Gilliland was the only Lancer to score in the third quarter, with one free throw. The overbearing Bulldog defense was too much for the Lancers, as they were limited to no field goals in the quarter. Madison added eight more points to the deficit to make the third-quarter score 34-11.
The Lancers began to warm up late in the game. They doubled their score in the fourth quarter alone.
Gilliland hit from underneath to start the quarter, followed by a free throw from Emmalee Seabolt and a 2-pointer from Madison Covey. Covey hit a 3-pointer further into the quarter, and the game ended with two free-throws from Gilliland.
“It started out rough, and we couldn’t get things going,” Vaughn said. “Our defense played well, they were rotating around the ball quickly.”
Gilliland led the Lancers with 10 points, followed by Covey with five and Strickler and LaCross with three points apiece.
