Mat Warriors come up short at state

TOPEKA — Allen County Kids Wrestling Club’s season came to an end Sunday. Four wrestlers qualified for the 2012 Kansas Kids Wrestling State Tournament but none came away with a state medal.

Seth Sanford went 2-2 in the 12-and-under 190-pound class. He opened by pinning Ryan Grover of St. Francis in 40 seconds Saturday. In the quarterfinals, Sanford was pinned by Nick Ackerman of Marysville in 2 minutes, 57 seconds.

In consolation bracket action Sunday, Sanford stayed alive by pinning Jon Kraus of Tonganoxie in 3:28. But in the next match, Jacob Hastings of Trailhands (Overbrook) pinned Sanford in 53 seconds.

Stephen McDonald won his first-round match in the high school division’s 220-pound class. He defeated Ryan Pokorny of Hays 10-6. Later Saturday in the quarterfinals, McDonald dropped a 9-6 decision to Ryker Greenbaum of Douglass.

On Sunday in consolation action, McDonald lost 7-1 to Brad Wilson of Lawrence Elite.

T.J. Taylor lost his first-round match Saturday 4-0 to Jimmy Guerrero of Ulysses. He came back in consolation action and pinned Calden Wilson of Winfield.

Taylor lost his consolation second-round match Sunday, 10-3 to Clayton Bowers of Brawlers (Andale).

Tristan Sigfusson qualified but unfortunately did not make weight at 120 pounds in the high school division.
