Coffeyville’s Field Kindley High’s Golden Tornado took advantage of Iola High Mustangs’ lack of offense for a 32-8 win here Monday.
It was the first loss in three games for the Iola High junior varsity football team.
“We got away with slow starts in the first two games but not tonight,” said Ron Schomaker, IHS assistant coach. “Our guys have to be ready to play when the game starts.”
Iola’s lone score came with one second left in the game. Freshman quarterback Adam Kauth hit freshman Bryce Misenhelter with a pass out in the flat and Misenhelter scored. The play covered 15 yards.
Kauth connected with Jesse Zimmerman, another freshman, for the two-point conversion.
Kauth was 4 of 4 for 51 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions. Misenhelter had two catches for 35 yards.
Coffeyville led 8-0 after one quarter then the ’Nado took advantage of an interception. The Iola miscue halted a drive deep into Coffeyville’s territory.
Coffeyville scored on a long run by James Newton. Newton scored on runs off 55 and 19 yards in the second quarter plus on a 17-yard pass in the first quarter from Ryan Redington.
Coffeyville led 20-0 at halftime. The teams played a scoreless third quarter.
Another interception set up Coffeyville’s 57-yard scoring pass play from Redington to Austin Stansbury. Then with 1:40 left, Newton took a pass 75 yards for another touchdown.
Iola ended up with 62 yards on 31 carries of the football. John Whitworth had 60 yards on 11 carries. Tyler McIntosh had 11 yards on three hauls and Tyler Clubine had nine yards on three carries.
Mason Coons, who was 0 of 8 passing with two interceptions, had minus-14 yards on seven carries and Kauth had one carry for minus-10 yards. McIntosh was 0 of 2 with two interceptions.
Eric Heffern had one catch for 13 yards. Jacob Rhoads had four yards on four carries and Derrick Weir had three yards on two carries.
Stephen McDonald led the Mustang defense with four solo tackles, five assisted tackles and a fumble recovery. Braden Larson had two solo stops, three assisted tackles and a fumble recovery.
Clubine had two solos and two assisted and Zack Vaughn made two solo stops and four assisted tackles. Shelton Reno, Whitworth and Misenhelter each had one solo tackle. Zeph Larney had two assisted tackles
Corey Taylor had three assisted tackles. Coons, McIntosh and Blake Appling each had an assisted tackle.
The Mustang junior varsity (2-1) travels to Columbus on Monday.
