PARSONS — Iola High’s wrestling team traveled to Parsons on Tuesday, where members fared well. Because the Mustangs don’t have enough wrestlers to fill all the weight classes, it will be nearly impossible for Iola to win as a team — Iola lost 30-14 on the day.
Iola did have a couple individual wrestlers stand out. Andrew Garber, who normally wrestles in the 182-pound division, squared off with a 170-pound wrestler from Parsons.
Garber won his match by a technical fall in the second period. Coach Jason Bates said that he wanted Garber to work more on takedowns and moves on top, which he did. Garber completed several three-point moves, helping him win his match by 15 points.
Seth Sanford also won his match on the night in the 195-pound weight class. Bates said he scored on a reversal and on a three-point near fall at the end of the third period to secure the win.
Colton Toney took on the 220-pound wrestler, for his first match of the year. He lost by being pinned.
Chandler House didn’t get to wrestle because Parsons didn’t have another 220-pound wrestler.
Bates said he was glad the team won two of the three matches that they actually had and that the team got the cobwebs blown off from a long Christmas break.
The team heads to the Burlington Invitational on Saturday morning.
