The Mustangs will enter their final regular season doubleheader Tuesday one game below .500 as they head on the road to face the Santa Fe Trail Chargers following Friday’s 11-1 victory over Coffeyville.
A five-run fifth inning earned the girls an early stoppage Friday, which came after a trio of two-run innings by Iola in the first, second and fourth innings.
Freshman pitcher Haidyn Desmarteau picked up the win, allowing just one hit and two walks while tallying three strikeouts.
Down by a run in the opening frame, freshman first baseman Breighlynn Rutherford put Iola on the scoreboard with an RBI sacrifice fly, then Rodriguez picked up her first RBI with a single.
In the second inning, a grounder by senior outfielder Faith Warden forced an infield error and plated a runner. Rutherford then plated Warden with an RBI grounder to give Iola a 4-1 lead.
A two-RBI double by Rodriguez in the fourth inning pushed Coffeyville out of contention as Iola built a 6-1 lead.
The Mustangs continued pouring on runs in the fifth with an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Shaylee Karns, followed by a two-run home run by Desmarteau. Sophomore shortstop Addie Wacker ended the contest after reaching home on an infield error.
Desmarteau tied freshman third baseman Kailyn Rodriguez for the team lead in RBIs with three each. Wacker had a team-leading three hits while successful in 3 of 4 at bats.
With the win, the Mustangs improved to 10–11. They wrap up the regular season Tuesday with the first pitch set for 4 p.m. and a 5:30 p.m. first pitch for the nightcap.
