LA CYGNES — Iola High School coaches got a better look at some of the Mustangs’ up-and-coming athletes during Monday’s Prairie View JV Invitational.
The day also was a bit of a proving ground for some of Iola’s underclassmen.
“It’s always exciting with the freshmen because you never know what to expect from them,” Iola assistant track coach Britt Daugharthy said.
“That’s why meets like this are perfect. They focus on what they need to practice on and not feel overwhelmed by a big track meet.”
Freshman Adam Klubek took first place in the 3200 race and third in the 1600.
The 4×400 relay team, composed of Ethan Hunt, Jimmy Maloney, Robert McLaughlin and Cameron Findley, took second in 4:28.75.
Freshman Henry Cramer took third in javelin with a 112’ 8” throw and fifth in shot put with a 31’ throw.
“They did phenomenal. Track is a cool sport, where anyone can have a phenomenal day and you don’t expect it,” Coach Daugharthy said. “Our pole vaulters hit some PRs and in the long jump, some of our girls who never got on the board made it into the pit.”
