Mustangs sweep Girard

GIRARD — The Mustang junior varsity and freshmen teams set a winning tone in Girard on Friday night leading up to the varsity’s upset victory over the fourth-ranked Trojans.
In the opening game of the night the junior varsity was able to pull off a thrilling 40-38 victory in a back-and-forth contest.
Iola was able to take the lead for good on a free throw by Cole Regehr with under a minute left in the game to break a 38-38 tie.
Regehr shared the team lead in points with Kane Rogers. Both players posted seven points.
Isaac Vink had six points while Noah Ashmore and Hunter Preston each added five to the winning cause.
The Mustang freshmen team rolled by Girard with a 38-25 victory.
Casen Barker led Iola with 12 points as the team opened their season 1-0 after struggling throughout the season as eighth-graders last year.

GIRLS
The Fillies’ junior varsity team struggled against Girard. The Trojans were able to topple Iola by a score of 38-13.
Macayla Bycroft, Piper Moore and Jennifer Tidd each shared the team-high in points with three each.
M.J. Neises added two points for Iola.
Girard also topped the Iola freshman team with a 39-27 final score.
Kelsey Morrison, Gabby Richards and Gabby Lampe each shared the team’s scoring lead with six points.
Neises and Elysia Kunkler each added three points.
