COLUMBUS — Iola High’s Mustangs got complete-game pitching performances from Connor Frazell and Jerrik Sigg in a doubleheader sweep of Columbus High’s Titans Monday.
“Both Connor and Jerrik pitched really well. Connor pitched ahead in the count a lot more than his last outing, which was good to see,” said Mark Percy, Mustang head coach. “Jerrik pitched well and we only had one error behind him.”
Iola pounded out 16 hits in a 13-4 win in the opener of the Southeast Kansas League twin bill. Frazell gave up five hits, walked three, hit one batter and struck out two.
Percy said only one of the four runs charged to Frazell was earned as the Mustangs made four errors in the game.
Iola started out strong with four runs in the first inning. Levi Ashmore drew a walk and Ryan Latta reached on an error. Frazell connected for an RBI single and Chris Heffern drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
Sigg hammered out a two-run home run. Columbus cut the Iola lead in half with two runs in its half of the first.
Ashmore, who had three singles, led off the second with a base hit and stole second base. R. Latta walked and Frazell hit his second RBI single of the game. Chris Heffern walked and Sigg reached on an error as a run scored.
The Mustangs kept the pressure on with four more runs in the third. Michael Anderson doubled with one gone, followed by a base hit from Ashmore. Anderson scored on a passed ball.
R. Latta doubled home Ashmore and scored on a two-out double by Chris Heffern. Sigg singled in Heffern.
Columbus produced two runs in the third to make it 10-4.
“We hit the heck out of the ball. The kids were hitting it hard,” Percy said.
The Mustangs added two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Sigg had two singles and a home run while Frazell and Jarred Latta each had two singles. Ryan Latta and Anderson each had a single and a double. Clint Heffern singled.
Percy said the second game was a bit frustrating but fun. Iola stranded 10 runners but won 2-1. All the scoring came in the sixth inning.
Chris Heffern led off the sixth for Iola with a single and Sigg doubled. Corey Taylor’s sacrifice fly to center plated Heffern. Clint Heffern singled in Sigg.
Sigg and the Mustangs held the Titans to just one run in the bottom of the sixth. Sigg allowed five hits, walked three and hit two batters. He also racked up nine strikeouts.
“It was nice to have a close game that we won. When we needed to make plays we made plays,” Percy said.
Sigg had two doubles and Chris Heffern had two singles. Ryan Latta singled and doubled and Jarred Latta doubled. Ashmore and Clint Heffern each had a single.
Iola is 7-7 in SEK play and 7-7 overall to stay right in the middle of the pack. The Mustangs have one more SEK doubleheader remaining at home next Monday against Fort Scott.
Iola plays Neodesha at home today and goes to Humboldt Friday.
