Mustangs trample Chargers 22-6

The Iola Middle School seventh-grade basketball team improved to 6-1 following Thursday's victory in Carbondale but the eighth-grade and junior varsity squads were not as fortunate.

The Iola Middle School Mustangs picked up a win while on the road Thursday at Santa Fe Trail.

According to a post by Iola Middle School Athletic Director Scott Brady, the seventh-grade Mustangs opened the evening with a 22-6 victory while the eighth-grade Mustangs fell 40-2 and the JV Mustangs fell 17-12.

In the opener, seventh-grader Elliot Sigg netted a team-leading 12 points, followed by Abby Boeken with eight. 

With the win, the seventh-grade Mustangs improved to 6-1. 

In the eighth-grade game, Cora Boren scored Iola’s only points. The eighth-grade Mustangs are 0-7. 

In JV action, the Mustangs nearly pulled off the win but fell 5 points short in the 17-12 loss. Hilary Gean and Maicy Kimball had 6 points each. The IMS JV stand at 3-4.

The Mustangs will not have long to think about Thursday’s losses. They return to the hardwood Monday for a road trip to LaCygne as they take on the Prairie View Buffalos. Games begin at 4 p.m. with two quarters of JV action, followed by the seventh-grade Mustangs, then the eighth-graders for the finale.
