Mustangs volley up some wins

NEODESHA — Iola’s tennis team picked up second place at a Neodesha tournament Saturday, racking up 12 wins on the day.
The Mustangs also were successful in a meet Thursday at Coffeyville, winning 13 of 15 matches.
Iola’s No. 1 doubles team of Bryan Mueller and Colby Works has been particularly successful, winning eight straight matches in all.
They went 4-0 on Saturday, sweeping past Andy Eam and Hunter Patten of Immaculata, 8-7; Austin McCallister and Ben Bailey of Maranatha, 8-4; Collin Cushin and Jalynn Lawrie of Independence, 8-5; and Isaak Tatum and Sean Albin of Neodesha, 8-2.
In No. 1 singles action, Iola’s Tyler Heinrich went 3-1. He defeated Kim Habib of Immaculata, 8-6; Jae Kim of Maranatha, 8-5 and Philip Porter of Neodesha, 8-0. Heinrich dropped an 8-1 decision to Zach Stacy of Independence.
Isaiah Fawson went 2-2 in No. 2 singles. He dropped Sam Rhee of Immaculata, 8-6 and Daniel Colbert of Independence, 8-0. Fawson fell, 8-6, to Grant Swank of Maranatha and 8-1 to Drake King of Independence.
In No. 2 doubles play, Iola’s Rhett Allen and Mason Key also went 2-2. They stopped Grayson Armstrong and Ben Lee of Immaculata, 8-1, and Korey Blecha and Blake McDaniel of Neodesha, 8-5. They fell, 8-6, to Kyle Arness and Sam Welch of Maranatha and 8-4 to Jordan Ashford and Trevor Ferguson of Independence.
The Mustangs are home this afternoon for their only local competition of the season. Today’s match was pushed back from March 27 because of rainy weather.
