FORT SCOTT — A 48-year old school record went by the wayside Thursday when Marmaton Valley High’s Daylen Houk blazed through the 100-meter dash in 11.27 seconds.
Houk’s gold medal-winning run at the Fort Scott Junior Varsity Invitational shattered Dave Clary’s mark of 11.3 seconds, set in 1965, said Kent Houk, Daylen Houk’s father and Marmaton Valley track coach.
Personal records was the tone of the day for the Wildcats. Marcus Miller ran a personal-best 5 minutes, 17.84 seconds to win the 1600-meter run, while Chance Stevenson set his best mark ever in the 3200-meter run, finishing second with a time of 11:34.07.
Houk added to his gold medal haul by winning the long jump with a distance of 18 feet, 10 3/4 inches. Trent Johnson was the victor in the javelin with a distance of 131’7”, while Carlos Gonzales was golden in the triple jump, clearing 38’1”. The pair also joined Garrett Booth and Chance Stevenson to win both the 4×100-meter and 4×400-meter relays, giving Houk four gold medals and Gonzales three on the day.
Gonzales also earned a silver medal in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 24.89 seconds. Garrett Booth was just behind in fourth at 25.82 seconds.
