YATES CENTER — A second-quarter 3-point barrage propelled Marmaton Valley High’s boys to a tournament championship Friday.
The Wildcats’ Garrett Morrison scored three times from beyond the arc and Brevyn Campbell once in the period as Marmaton Valley turned a 14-10 deficit into a 35-2 lead over St. Paul.
A balanced scoring attack helped Marmaton Valley keep that advantage in a 64-46 victory in Yates Center’s Midseason Tournament.
Marmaton Valley (7-7 overall) went 3-0 in the round-robin tournament.
The Wildcats maintained a 43-34 lead through the third quarter before Tyler Lord keyed a strong fourth quarter, scoring seven of his game-high 17 down the stretch.
Morrison followed with 15, while Ethan Lawson scored 12 and Campbell 11.
Kingston McRay scored 16 and Brec Norris 11 for St. Paul, which also had a strong shooting night with nine 3-pointers as a team. Marmaton Valley wound up hitting five treys, four coming in the second period.
IN GIRLS play, St. Paul held leads of 9-0 after one quarter and 27-5 at halftime in the 43-13 win over the Wildcats.
Andie Carr scored nine to lead the Wildcats (2-12).
Kaydra Mathis scored 15, Kyndahl Venneman had 14 and Brittany Deegan scored 12 for St. Paul.
MARMATON Valley returns to Yates Center Tuesday to resume regular season play, before visiting Southeast-Cherokee on Friday.
