Newcomer shines in Fillies tennis debut

INDEPENDENCE — Iola High’s Ellie Kippenberger proved a formidable foe in her first varsity action of the 2020 girls tennis season Thursday.

Playing in No. 2 singles action, Kippenberger went 4-0 at the Independence Invitational.

Kippenberger defeated Ashley Smith of Fort Scott, 8-0, Gabby Kasjaka of Pittsburg, 8-1, Karma Roth of Independence, 8-1, and Aimee Maxton of Chanute, 8-3.

Elsewhere, both of Iola’s doubles teams — Sidney and Miah Shelby in No.1  doubles, and Keira Fawson and Rebekah Coltrane in No. 2 doubles — went 1-3 on the day. 

No. 1 singles player Jessica Tidd went 0-4.

The Shelby sisters  defeated Emmerson and Krokroskia of Fort Scott, 8-6, before falling to Hogge and Bertie of Independence, 8-0, to McGown and Lawson of Pittsburg, 8-3, and to Bogle and Thompson of Chanute, 8-2.

Fawson and Coltrane knocked off Chanute’s Aguilar and Palet, 8-6, while falling to Rodriguez and Kippenberger of Independence, 8-0, to Cawyer and McCabe of Pittsburg, 8-2, and to Majors and Smith of Fort Scott, 8-5.

Tidd dropped decisions to Fort Scott’s Emma Daley, Kristina Morrison of Independence, Marci Brown of PIttsburg and Kori Babcock of Chanute.

The Fillies will travel to Chanute next Thursday.
