WICHITA — Anything else Ashleigh Nicholas could accomplish was gravy. The Iola freshman had made it.

Nicholas came into the season with the goal of running at the Kansas State High School Track and Field Championships and she accomplished that by taking fourth in last week’s regional in Chanute.

That gave her the chance to race on Friday at 9 a.m., in the girls Class 4A 100-meter hurdle preliminaries.

“It was really fun,” Nicholas said. “I wasn’t nervous until I actually got into the blocks, but I think it does that with everyone and a lot of people would agree with me on that one.”

Nicholas finished in 16th-place with a time of 17.89 seconds.

Although the time was not what she had hoped for, Nicholas is confident that the experience will make her better for the future and she is inspired to try even harder to master the craft.

“This year I didn’t take track too seriously, but I think next year I will,” Nicholas said.

The future is certainly bright for the young hurdler as she has three more years to improve of this year’s result.
