CHANUTE — An extended cold spell to start the second half did in Allen Community College’s women Wednesday.
Host Neosho County Community College outscored the Red Devils 12-1 to start the second half, turning a tie game into a 40-29 lead.
Allen rebounded to an extent, closing the gap to five points, but could not draw any closer in a 67-57 loss.
The defeat drops the Red Devils to 1-4 in Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division play and 8-9 overall.
“At some point we need to realize we’re just not a very good offensive team,” Allen coach Mark James said. “We’ve got to start getting better defensively.”
The Red Devils were ice cold from the field for much of the second half, making only 3 of their first 23 field goal attempts.
A Leslie Ware 3-pointer at the 12:24 mark of the second half was Allen’s only field goal until she connected again from 3-point range with 5 minutes remaining in the contest.
By then, the Panthers had opened a 15-point lead, 56-41.
Kayla Morton’s steal and layup, followed by a pair of DaNara Day free throws closed the gap back into single digits, 62-53, by the 5:05 mark of the game. The Panthers hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final 30 seconds to prevent any hopes of a comeback.
The Red Devils were without the services of Kendra Taiclet, who missed the game due to illness.
Allen hit only 15 of 54 field goals, 28 percent, and 3 of 20 3-pointers, 15 percent.
Neosho County, on the other hand, hit 5 of 11 treys and shot 48 percent from the field.
Day’s 19 points led the Red Devils, followed by Miracle Davis with 16. Ronesha Hall pulled in five rebounds.
Alexis Hafenstein scored 19 to pace the Panthers. Katie Gorman followed with 10.
