Gaining a spiritual, mental and physical body and mind is being offered through PiYo. The class combines both Pilates and yoga through exercises that focus on controlled movements and poses. The class is being offered at the recreation building Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 6 p.m.
“The person who created PiYo intended it to be a combination of Pilates and yoga,” instructor Sarah Noah, 37, said. “They wanted to add movement into the class so that it would be more than just holding poses and more exciting. It lasts an hour, it’s a fun class and people will sweat a lot.”
Noah said that PiYo is designed for group exercise. She attended a daylong certification class in Ponca City, Okla. in April, and continues to receive additional educational material. The PiYo certification class was the first time she had tried the exercise.
“It’s really good for making people strong, flexible and helping with balance,” Noah said. “At least it has with me.”
Noah said the recreation office heard she was already teaching a class in the early mornings on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
“The people that have been coming have seemed to really like the class so far,” Noah said. “It’s been popular, they’re getting up really early to take the class. There’s been between 10 to 15 people to come at 5:15 a.m. for the class.”
Noah said participants of the pre-dawn workout seem to enjoy starting their days this way as well as the fact that they’ve gotten their day’s exercise out of the way with first thing.
Noah said anybody can join the class.
“The class can be modified to any fitness level,” Noah said. “There is a lady who is in her 70s and she modifies the class for her. There are also a couple people their 60s. It’s kind of scary at first because the first time you take the class it can be kind of overwhelming. It moves very quickly. But, we can slow it down and modify it  so any fitness level can take the class. It’s low impact, high intensity.”
The next rec class is at the recreation building on Thursday at 6 p.m. For more information, contact the recreation office at 365-4990.
