The eighth-grade varsity was the lone Pony team to walk away with a win on Monday as Iola Middle School hosted Prairie View.
The eighth-grade Ponies had trouble stopping the Buffalos defensively, ending the first quarter down 10-9. Neither team scored in the second quarter.
Another nine-point effort in the third gave the Ponies a three-point lead thanks in part to the Iola defense holding Prairie View to just six points.
The fourth is where they really pulled away as the Ponies had their best quarter of the game on both ends, scoring 12 and holding the Buffalos to five points to get the 30-21 win.
Jenna Curry led the way with a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 13 boards. Maci Miller had six points and a team-high two steals, Chloe Sell had four points, Josie Plumlee had three points and the team’s lone block and Reece Murry had two points.
For the junior varsity, Prairie View jumped in early with Iola falling 20-11.
The Buffalos outscored Iola 7-2 in the first quarter and extended that lead in the second scoring five more and holding the Ponies to just a point. Iola cut their lead to seven points after a 6-4 third quarter but a 2-4 fourth pushed their lead back to nine at the final buzzer.
Hannah Hall led the Ponies with four points while Triniti Loveall, Miah Shelby, and Rhegan Fischer each had two points. Miller scored a point. Loveall had a team-high five rebounds, and Hall had three steals. Skyler Walden and Loveall had the team’s only two blocks.
The seventh-grade Ponies fell in a similar fashion, digging themselves into a hole early and failing to find a way out.
The varsity lost big, 29-11, but found themselves down just a point after the first quarter. A 13-0 second quarter gave Prairie View all of the daylight that they needed going into the half leading 18-4.
The Ponies defense recovered in the third quarter, holding the Buffalos to five points while scoring three and did basically the same thing in the fourth, scoring four and allowing six from Prairie View.
Aysha Houk had four points and was one of three Ponies with two steals. Cali Riley had three points and Celina Caron and Jadyn Kauffman had two points to go along with a team-high 11 rebounds.
The junior varsity Ponies were in it for the duration but couldn’t hold on, falling 8-6.
Both teams had a bucket in the first half and that’s it. The scoreless streak seeped into the third quarter as well as the Ponies saw themselves fall behind 4-2. Both teams scored four points apiece in the fourth.
Caron had four points and Carly Dreher had two.
The Ponies play their final game of the season on Thursday at home versus Santa Fe Trail.
