GARNETT — Iola Middle School’s girls won all four games Monday at Anderson County Junior High.
The two A-team games came down to the end with the Ponies winning.
Iola’s eighth-grade A-team had to hold on against a Bulldog rally. The Ponies posted a 22-20 victory.
Iola led 8-4 at halftime. It pushed its margin to 16-7 after three quarters. Anderson County outscored Iola 13-6 in the final period to make it close.
“These girls have im-proved so much as a team over last year,” said Marty Taylor, IMS head coach. “We didn’t protect the lead very well but the efort was outstanding. We moved the ball and ran the floor much better tonight.”
Kyra Moore fired in eight points while Emmalee Sea-bolt had eight points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Jo Lohman and Emma Piazza each had four points.
Lohman also collected four rebounds.
Iola’s seventh-grade A-team rallied late in each half and came up with a 21-20 victory. The Ponies were down 13-8 in the first quarter and got it tied 13-all by halftime.
Anderson County was up 19-17 going into the fourth quarter. Iola outscored the Bulldogs 4-1 to win.
“These girls have worked hard. It’s nice to see it pay off for them,” Taylor said. “Defensively, we were much better tonight. We didn’t give up the easy shots and kept the second shots to a minimum.”
Tryia Harvey paced the Ponies with six points while Hannah Ingle had five points and six re-bounds.
Makaela Platt grabbed five rebounds.
Taylor Sell and Ashlie Shields each had four points. Elise Wolf scored two points.
The B-team games had four-minute quarters.
The eighth-grade B-team won 20-2. Scoring four points each were Lexie Long, Emory Driskel, Chel-sea Lea and Sarah Gonzales. Kim Kaufman and Hannah Stout each had two points.
Iola won the seventh-grade B-team game 20-6, led by Ingle with six points. Taelyn Sutterby and Macaiah Larney each had four points. Cassie Delich and Harvey had two points each.
Iola hosts Chanute’s Royster Middle School Thursday.
