PITTSBURG — Iola Middle School’s eighth-graders went 1-1 on the day Saturday in taking second place at Pittsburg Middle School’s Winter Classic.
The Ponies came from behind to topple Independence, 23-20, before falling short against Royster Middle School of Chanute, 26-16.
“It was a good effort all day,” head coach Marty Taylor said. “At times we had a little trouble scoring, but the kids played hard.”
The Independence game was tightly fought throughout. The Ponies trailed 17-15 after three quarters before ending the game on an 8-3 run.
Isaac Vink led the way with 13 points, followed by Evan Sigg with five points and seven rebounds. Zach Cokely added two points and four boards. Cale Barnhart scored two points. Matt Miller had one point and five rebounds.
Sigg’s double-double led the way against Royster with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Vink followed with five points. Matt Miller had eight rebounds.
The Ponies travel to Coffeyville Thursday.
