COLUMBUS — A combined B-team of eighth-grade and seventh-grade players from Iola Middle School posted an 18-15 win over host Columbus Monday. It was the lone win of the night for the visiting Pony girls.
Micaiah Larney led the Ponies to victory with eight points. Kim Kaufman added four points.
Scoring two points each were Hannah Stout and Taelyn Sutterby. Trilby Bannister and Chelsea Lea had one point apiece.
Iola’s eighth-grade A-team went scoreless for the first quarter and never could catch up. The Ponies trailed 22-10 at halftime and lost 42-16.
“Columbus is a very good basketball team and we had two or three stretches that really just killed us,” said Marty Taylor, IMS head coach.
“We did some nice things just not enough to overcome our mistakes.”
Jo Lohman scored four points and had four rebounds. Kyra Moore and Emery Driskell each had four points.
Katie Shields tossed in two points. Emmalee Seabolt had two points and four rebounds.
Iola’s seventh-grade A-team came up short 20-17. It was tied 6-6 at intermission.
Columbus outscored Iola 8-6 in the third quarter. It held off Iola in the fourth period, 6-5.
“The girls are improving every game. We just didn’t take advantage of their mistakes down the stretch,” Taylor said.
Hannah Ingle, Ashlie Shields and Elise Wolf each had five points. Makaela Platt scored two points.
Ingle and Platt each controlled seven rebounds and Taylor Sell had five rebounds.
“Elise shot the ball well from the outside,” Taylor said.
The IMS teams go to Independence next Monday.
