FREDONIA — Humboldt High’s Robbie Sellman recovered nicely from a rough front nine to earn a sixth-place medal at the Fredonia Invitational Tuesday.
After struggling through the first nine holes with a 43, the Humboldt junior pared six strokes his second nine for a 37, tying for the best nine-hole score of the tournament.
He finished with an 80, two strokes behind the top two golfers, Chase Coble of Olpe and Austin Waggoner of Fredonia. Three other golfers shot 79.
Humboldt’s Tanner Porter finished 40th with a 113. Ryan Huse took 43rd with a 119, and Conner Roseberry finished 45th with a 131.
The Cubs finished seventh as a team with a 443.
MEANWHILE, Yates Center’s Nick Schemper was done in with a quadruple bogey eight on the ninth hole, thwarting his medal bid.
Schemper finished in a tie for 17th with an 86.
“Nick was shooting great until the ninth hole,” Wildcat golf coach Kevin Barnes said. “He recovered and shot a 41 on the back nine.”
Tuesday’s tournament marked the first ever 18-hole competition for Yates Center’s Remi Wagner, who shot a 105 to tie for 38th, and Jon Barnes, who took 44th with a 127.
“It takes a lot of stamina to walk and carry their bags that far,” Coach Barnes said. “They played a few strokes better than I was expecting, but were very worn out at the end.”
