The postseason fate of several area high schools — Iola included — will be decided this week.
The regular season wraps up Thursday and Friday, with high school playoffs beginning next week.
The top two teams from each district will earn playoff spots, with each district’s champion guaranteed to open the playoffs at home.
District records, head-to-head matchups and finally point differential in district games are used to determine which teams advance.
Iola’s 2-0 district record, and its 42-point differential in those games (wins over Burlington and Anderson County), means the Mustangs already are guaranteed a playoff spot, their first since 2008.
The Register has studied potential playoff scenarios for Iola and the two other area schools still alive for a postseason berth — in this case, Humboldt and Yates Center.
Without further ado, let’s dive into the standings.
Class 4A-II District 3
Team Record PD
Iola 2-0 +42
Girard 1-1 +19
Burlington 1-1 -19
Anderson County 0-2 -42
What we know now:
Iola is in the playoffs and Anderson County is out no matter what happens on Thursday night.
What’s on the line:
Iola controls its own destiny as the only undefeated team in the district.
Possible outcomes:
If Iola and Burlington win: Iola will be the district champion and host a playoff game. Burlington would be the second playoff team based on its two-point victory over Girard last week.
If Girard and Burlington win: With a three way tie atop the league standings, it would come down to the point differential. With the 21-point cap on points, Burlington could not past either Girard or Iola. The champion would be determined by point differential and if Girard wins by more than 11 they would be the district champions and if it is an 11 point or less margin, Iola would be the champion.
If Iola and Anderson County win: Iola would be the district champion. There would be a three-way tie for second and would earn the second spot with Burlington and Anderson County unable to make up the point difference.
If Girard and Anderson County win: Girard would be the district champion on the strength of their head-to-head win over Iola. Iola would be the second playoff team.
Class 3A District 6
Team Record PD
Jayhawk-Linn 2-0 +42
Erie 1-1 +13
Humboldt 1-1 -13
NE Arma 0-2 -42
What we know now:
Jayhawk-Linn is in. Northeast Arma is out.
What’s on the line:
It is highly likely that Jayhawk-Linn (9-0 overall) will beat Erie (2-6). If that happens Humboldt will be in a win-and-in position.
Possible outcomes:
If Jayhawk-Linn and Humboldt win: Jayhawk-Linn will be the district champion and Humboldt will also make the playoffs.
If Jayhawk-Linn and Northeast Arma win: Jayhawk-Linn and Erie make it based on point differential.
If Erie and Northeast Arma win: Erie is district champion and Jayhawk-linn is other playoff team.
If Erie and Humboldt win: That results in a three-way tie and Jayhawk-Linn and Erie would make the playoffs on point differential.
Class 2-1A District 4
Team Record PD
Colgan 2-0 +42
Oswego 1-1 0
Yates Center 1-1 -2
Uniontown 0-2 -40
What we know now:
Colgan will beat Uniontown, which makes Yates Center at Oswego a winner-take-all game. This one is pretty simple.
8-Man-I District 1
Team Record PD
St. Paul 4-0 +84
West Elk 3-1 +42
Sedan 3-1 +41
Madison 3-1 -25
Marmaton V. 1-3 -58
SCC 0-4 -84
What we know now:
Marmaton Valley and Southern Coffey County have each been eliminated.
8-Man-II District 1
Team Record PD
Lebo 5-0 +77
Waverly 4-1 +76
Pleasanton 3-2 +25
Crest 3-2 +21
Chetopa 2-4 -31
MdCV 1-4 -63
Altoona-Midway 0-5 -105
What we know now:
No matter what happens Waverly and Lebo are in. Even if Crest wins and Waverly loses the point differential is too great.
