Stop us if you’ve heard this before…

Rainy weather wreaked havoc on the spring sports scene, especially in Iola, where home baseball, softball and track events were washed away before they got started.

The only event that took place as scheduled — the Buck Quincy Invitational Golf Tournament — was shortened to nine holes instead of the anticipated 18 once the rain began to fall.

The ball games against Parsons were canceled, according to the high school, with no makeup date announced.

The home track meet, Iola’s first regular season varsity meet in several years, has been pushed to Monday at Riverside Park.

DESPITE dealing with miserable conditions, local golfers still shined at the Allen County Country Club.

Humboldt High’s Ryan Sellman shot a 43 over the nine holes to take the tournament championship, one stroke better than Iola High’s Jeremy Waldman.

“Ryan didn’t play his best, but it basically rained the entire time, which made for some tough conditions out there,” Humboldt golf coach Scott Brady said. “It was great to get a tournament win under his belt.”

Humboldt took third as a team, the first team medal of the year, Brady said.

Drake Hottenstein took sixth at 46 strokes. Other scores for the Cubs: Tanner Church, 56, Reid Smith, 59, Aiden Johnson, 65, and Roni Bulk, 68.

For Iola, Chloe Hageman placed 13th with a 52, followed by Josh Kaufman in 22nd with a 58, and Grant Luedke in 26th with a 66.

Iola placed fourth as a team.

MANY OF the same golfers will return to the country club next Tuesday as part of Humboldt’s invitational tournament.
