HUMBOLDT — Records were tumbling off school leaderboards all over the place at the Humboldt track meet on Thursday.
Humboldt senior Joe Kline highlighted the performances for the host Cubs by breaking Rusty Nordt’s 1600-meter run record.
Kline was able to run a 4:38.72 to win the meet and break Nordt’s long-standing record of 4:40.6.
“I am going to go to school tomorrow and I’m going to tape my name up on the board,” Kline said.
Kline was also able to win the 800-meter run with a 2:03.31 and he feels confident in all his running events with league, regional and state meets right around the corner.
Kline added a third first-place mark as a part of the Cub 4×400 team that won the relay with a 3:47.52.
Kline’s fourth event was a new one for him as he threw the shot put. He recently threw that shot for the first time since middle school and on Thursday, he took fifth with a throw of 38’10.25”.
“I threw it in middle school and medaled in league,” Kline said. “I was just messing around in practice one day and I threw better than most everybody so we tried it.”
Kline’s teammate Colton Riebel won the event with a 41’9.5”.
Humboldt’s Colin Gilliespie also added to the team’s gold medal count with a winning jump of 5’8” in the high jump and followed that performance up with a 38’7” jump in the triple jump to also take first in that event.
