FORT SCOTT — Early foul trouble plagued both teams Tuesday night as Allen Community College traveled to Fort Scott to take on the Greyhounds. ALLEN’S WOMEN led 37-27 but saw Fort Scott open the second half with a 14-4 run to tie the score at 41-41. The Greyhounds took the lead abotu a minute later at 45-44.
The Red Devils settled their ship late in the first half, turning a two-point advantage into a 46-37 lead at intermission.
Allen made its lead stand up in the second half — thanks in large part to a zone defense — in a 87-71 win.
The victory lifts Allen to 4-1 on the year. Fort Scott falls to 0-4.
On the women’s side, Allen led by 10 at halftime but could not hold off Fort Scott in a 68-64 defeat to fall to 3-2.
With several players on the bench with two fouls, Allen used its zone to great effect, ACC assistant coach Ryan Mahoney said.
The Greyhounds went only 3 of 12 from 3-point range as Allen’s lead grew to 20.
The Red Devils used a balanced scoring attack at the other end, with six players in double figures — “the theme of the team so far this season,” Mahoney said.
Tyrone Jones and Raheem Tyner both had 13 to lead the way, followed by Alex Miller and Tray Fountain with 12 and Josh Sweet and Courtney Stockard with 10 apiece.
Tyner and Stockard pulled down six and five rebounds, respectively. Stockard also had four assists.
Kevin House scored 20 and Mabor Gabriel 16 to lead the Greyhounds.
Allen rebounded with a 9-2 run to lead 53-47, but the the Greyhounds responded again, taking the lead for good at 58-57 with just under 5 minutes left.
Jameeshia Armstrong’s basket with 24 seconds left pulled the Red Devils to within 66-64, but a missed free throw and three straight misses from the field ended the comeback hopes.
Armstong led the Red Devils with 16 points and five rebounds, while O’ceonna Weston followed with 15 points. Erika Essman scored 11. Nicole Salazar had eight points and five assists. Briana Barrett racked up eight points with 13 rebounds. Kylie Molisee pulled down seven rebounds.
