Red Devil women down Ravens

Allen Community College women pulled together as a team Saturday afternoon in a thrilling victory over a strong Coffeyville Community College team.
“I’ve never been more proud of a group of kids,” head coach Mark James said. “Coffeyville is a top team.”
The 68-62 win came at the hand of five players who had all of the Red Devils’ points. DaNara Day and Leslie Ware led with 16 points each, Kayla Morton had 15, Miracle Davis 14 and Hannah Blackwell contributed seven.
The Ravens’ Tonisha Wilson came out hot in the first half, with back-to-back three-pointers. However, the tide began to change in the Red Devils’ favor midway through the first half. Day started the offensive strike with a fast-break layup, followed by a long three from outside with just over 12 minutes in the half.
While still trailing, ACC held strong on defense over the Ravens. Three-pointers from Ware and Morton heated up the floor and gave the women a chance to speed things up. They went into the locker room at halftime leading 31-27.
“I’m proud of their defensive effort, nothing came easy. Coffeyville had to earn every shot,” James said.
Morton opened the second half with another 3-pointer. She went two for two from beyond the line, both in opportune moments. James said the team’s strength, its shooting, can sometimes be seen as a weakness, but it paid off on Saturday.
“We live by the three and die by the three, live by shooting and die by shooting,” James said.
Some key drives from Davis and Day kept the momentum on their side. ACC pulled away by as many as 10 midway through the second half, and controlled the game for the remainder.
The Ravens held off on the fouling until 45 seconds were left on the clock. The stifling defense of the Red Devils kept their best attempts at a comeback at bay. The fouling strategy came too little too late.
The ACC faces off against Labette Community College on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
