The bad news was that Allen Community College’s women dropped a 26-point decision Saturday to the visiting Butler Grizzlies, 69-43.
The good news was the contest marked a 49-point improvement for the Red Devils, who fell to the same team, 103-28, just two weeks earlier.
“I thought we competed much better against them,” Allen head coach Katie Mahoney said. “We knew they liked to get out and pressure you into turnovers so they can get into their transition game.”
The Grizzlies did just that early on, racing to a 15-3 lead barely five minutes into the game.
But Allen settled down on offense after that, and effectively limited Butler’s scoring chances the rest of the half.
O’ceonna Weston’s 3-pointer with 38 seconds left pulled Allen to within 38-19 at the break.
Allen did a better job of holding onto the ball after halftime, although the Red Devils still committed 31 turnovers in the game. Nineteen were in the first half alone.
As a result, Butler’s shooting percentage dropped from 46 percent in the opening 20 minutes to 31 percent in the second half.
Allen also controlled the boards, outrebounding the Grizzlies, 25 to 19, after the break.
Kylie Molisee led Allen with a double double, 10 points and 15 rebounds, while Weston scored 12 points and pulled in eight rebounds.
“Kylie really did a nice job battling inside,” Mahoney said. “I didn’t realize she had that many boards until I saw the stat sheet. O’ceonna did a good job on offense tonight as well.”
Kaylie Cleaver chipped in with eight points for the Red Devils.
“Kaylie had a bunch of turnovers in her last game against these guys,” Mahoney said. “It was good to see her do so well.”
Nicole Salazar had five assists and two steals. Reagan McClellan and Asia Shelton added three and two steals, respectively.
Teanna Reid’s 17 points paced Butler. Ashlee Ivy added 12 and Alli Heimerman had 10.
The Red Devils are in Cowley tonight for a contest postponed from last Wednesday due to wintry weather. A home game follows Wednesday evening against Coffeyville.
