NEVADA, Mo. — Danielle Best ripped the nets for 30 points, hitting nine three-point field goals to lead the Allen County Community College Red Devils to a 66-64 overtime win Saturday.
The Red Devils defeated Missouri Valley College’s junior varsity to even their mark in the Cottey College Classic over the weekend.
The good thing is Best didn’t even score in the overtime period. Jazmyne Johnson sank 4 of 4 free throw attempts, Aeriss McNeese had a field goal and Rackell Goldson hit a three.
“The ladies showed character bouncing back from a loss,” said Marcus Hicks, ACCC head coach. “Our defense has to get better. We are putting opponents on the free-throw line too many times.”
Allen County lost 54-51 to Hesston College Friday. Best had 27 points, hitting eight threes, as the lone Red Devil in double figure scoring.
The Red Devils led Hesston 26-21 at halftime.
“We have to learn to play without fouling. They (Hesston) were 10 of 25 at the line,” Hicks said. “We have to finish. We missed three wide-open layups.”
On Saturday, a slow start had Allen County down by 10 points, 30-20, at halftime to Missouri Valley JV. Best fired in 21 of her 30 points in the second half. The teams were tied 57-all at the end of regulation.
Johnson finished with 10 points. The Red Devils were 14 of 26 at the free-throw line. Missouri Valley was 13 of 17 at the line.
The Red Devil women are 2-1 on the season. They travel to Pratt Tuesday, then play at home Friday and Saturday in the Red Devil Classic.
