ARKANSAS CITY — Bryce Williams cranked out a three-run home run and Curtis Bunch followed with a solo blast to put Allen County Community College up 4-1 in the second inning of Tuesday’s second game.
The Red Devils wanted to forget about the first game — a 17-7 loss to host Cowley County Community College. The Tigers scored 11 runs on six hits, three walks, two hit batters and an ACCC error in the first inning of that game.
Allen County’s lead didn’t last long in the second contest. The Tigers produced four runs of their own in the second inning to push back in front, 5-4.
Wyatt Hall drew a leadoff walk for the Red Devils in the fourth. Brayden Brumley hit a ground-rule double then Ryan Fike delivered a two-run base hit. Connor McCrite reached first on a base-on-balls followed by a fielder’s choice by Brad Alberts.
Marcus Peavler’s double drove in two runs. Michael Schell connected for an RBI single. Allen County scored five runs to a 9-5 lead.
Cowley County scored a run in the fifth. Allen County responded with a two-out double by Schell and a single by Williams for a run in the sixth.
The 10-6 win put ACCC at 7-9 in Jayhawk Eastern Division play and 13-13 overall. The Red Devils are sixth in the division while Cowley County (14-6, 20-11) is second.
Cody Wren was the winning pitcher for ACCC. Wren worked seven innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits, two walks and one hit batter. He struck out two. Aaron Burke worked two scoreless innings and gave up three hits and struck out three.
Williams had four RBIs on his home run and single. Brumley, Peavler and Schell each had a single and a double. Bunch hit a home run. Fike, McCrite and Alberts had a single apiece.
In the first game, Matt Stalcup and Dylan Bowman weren’t able to get an out in the bottom of the first. The two ACCC pitchers surrendered eight runs on two hits, three walks and two hit batters.
Ben Pearson came on in relief and worked 52⁄3 innings for ACCC. He gave up nine runs on 13 hits, four walks and one hit batter. He struck out four in the loss.
It was 15-6 after three innings. Allen County’s offense was led by Williams with a single and a triple while Peavler and McCrite had a single and a double apiece. Alberts hit two singles. Brumley and Fike had a base hit apiece.
Allen County hosts first-place Johnson County Saturday at 1 p.m. at Red Devil Field.
