HUMBOLDT Mama said thered be days like this.
One night after clicking on all cylinders in a romp over Crest, Humboldt Highs boys found themselves staring at the other side of the coin Friday.
The Cubs failed to score a point in the first quarter and trailed 30-4 at the break against Tri-Valley league rival Erie.
Theres really no words to describe it, Humboldt head coach David Taylor said.
The Red Devils cruised in the second half, rolling to a 56-24 win to wrap up the Humboldt Preseason Tournament.
The wheels fell off, and it felt like mini-quicksand, Taylor said.
Humboldt struggled across the board, shooting an ice-cold 18 percent from the field and even colder (13 percent) from two-point range.
And we didnt defend well, Taylor said. We didnt rebound at all.
Humboldt didnt score until Gavin Page scored on a putback in the opening minute of the second quarter. Briar Orth added a pair of free throws at the 2:23 mark of the half.
And that was it.
Meanwhile, Eries Matthew Vail scored 10 in the first quarter and nine in the second, on the way to a 24-point night.
Humboldt was led by Isiah Coronado, who scored eight points and five rebounds. Conor Haviland pulled in six boards and had three blocks.
IT WAS an entirely different story 24 hours earlier, when the Cubs showed just how devastating their three-pronged attack can be.
Coronado lit things up from outside, draining four 3-pointers. Josh Hull was a monster in the middle, hitting 7 of 11 from the field. And Haviland was everywhere else on offense and defense.
The trio combined for 60 points, 18 rebounds and 11 steals as Humboldt broke open a close game midway through the first quarter and never looked back. The Cubs led 42-22 at the break before exploding in the third quarter, to the tune of a 20-6 run to trigger a running clock in the final eight minutes.
