For those grousing about the early cold snap that has enveloped southeast Kansas, a visit to Allen Community College’s gymnasium Friday evening was a perfect elixir.
The Red Devils shot a scorching 57 percent, while sophomore guard Alex Miller was white hot from 3-point range, particularly in the first half.
The sophomore guard was 7 of 10 with treys — part of his game-high 23 points — as Allen rolled to a 123-84 victory.
The win lifts Allen’s record to 6-3 — after winning all of six games last season — and sets up a key pre-Thanksgiving matchup Tuesday at home against Hutchinson.
The visiting Blue Dragons will be in town for an 8 p.m. tip-off.
“I’m excited about it,” Allen head coach Andy Shaw said. “Everybody played well tonight, and everybody played lots of minutes, so we should be well rested against Hutchinson.”
The game was never in doubt.
Allen led 22-8 in the game’s first 4 1/2 minutes and 41-15 by the midway point of the first half.
Miller’s sixth trey of the half pushed the lead over 30, 62-31. DeShawn Watson’s buzzer-beating putback put the Devils up 66-31 at intermission.
“I thought the guys did a great job of attacking the rim, and when you leave Alex alone like that, he can make those shots,” Shaw said.
Miller was 6 of 7 from 3-point range in the first half.
Allen hit the century mark with 10 minutes left in the game, at which point all of the ACC starters were on the bench to cool their heels the rest of the night.
Miller was hardly the only offensive star.
Ten of the ACC players scored at least seven points, while Allen dished out a whopping 28 assists in the contest.
Tyrone Jones scored 13 of the most spectacular points you’ll see, including a pair of jaw-dropping alley-oop dunks, much to the delight of the Red Devil faithful.
“That’s what Tyrone can do,” Shaw said. “He’s so athletic, he can score around you, over you and even through you.”
Watson delivered a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Courtney Stockard scored 12 and Raheem Tyner had 11. Josh Sweet and Tray Fountain both had seven assists.
Perhaps most remarkably, Allen rolled up 123 points despite hitting only 8 of 20 free throws.
Jake Strother scored 18 to pace Tabor’s JV. Nick Rice followed with 17, while Mark Montgomery added 13 and Sawyer Golden scored 11.
“This was a good team win,” Shaw said. “There were positives and negatives, as there always are, and it’s time to put this one out of our mind and get ready for Hutch.”
