WICHITA — Rene Rodriguez came up just short of reaching his lofty expectations at the state track meet over the weekend.
Rodriguez pulled in a pair of medals, taking fourth in the Class 1A boys 100-meter dash and seventh in the 200-meter dash.
But he wasn’t happy.
“I was wanting to do more,” he said. “My first goal was to qualify for state in four events at regionals.”
He was successful in three, qualifying in the 100, 200 and 400 meters, but coming up just short in the discus.
Once at Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium, Rodriguez wanted to medal in all three events. He was successful on two, but failed to qualify in the 400 Friday evening.
“This gives me something to work for next year,” he said.
Still, Rodriguez was successful enough to rank 24th among all Class 1A teams at the state track meet. He scored seven points.
MEANWHILE, Southern Coffey County’s memorable Friday afternoon performances by Aaron True and Walker Harred propelled the Titans to a 12th place finish as a team.
True set a state meet record in winning the javelin, while Harred won the discus. Combined with Hunter Pankey’s sixth-place finish in the long jump, SCC racked up 23 points in the final team standings.
Harred also tacked on a 14th-place finish in the boys shot put.
The Lady Titans’ Chenae Newkirk competed in two events. She placed 11th in the 1600-meter run and 15th in the 800-meter run.
