Runs aplenty for Fillies junior varsity

Iola High’s late offensive burst led to victory in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday.
The Fillies junior varsity softball team tried to equal its feat in the nightcap, but came up three runs shy.
Iola opened its season with a doubleheader split against visiting Anderson County, winning the opener, 15-8, and losing the second game, 11-8.
Iola scored five in the second to overcome an early deficit before plating nine in the bottom of the fourth. Iola entered the frame trailing 8-6.
Torrie Lewis walked four times and had two runs. Shelby Smith tripled and had three runs. Emily McKarnin had two singles and two RBIs. Baylea Thompson had three doubles and three RBIs. Lexi Heslop walked, stole a base and scored a run. Baleigh Seeber walked three times and scored a run. Taylor Sell singled, walked and scored twice. Tori Smith stole a base and scored a run. Lyssa Brookes walked and scored twice.
Anderson County led 10-0 after half an inning of the second game.
Iola responded with one each in the first and second, four in the third and two more in the fourth.
Lewis singled, walked and scored twice. Smith had a single and run. McKarnin singled, doubled and scored twice. Thompson had a walk and RBI. Heslop scored a run and was hit by a pitch. Seeber walked and scored twice. Sell reached base twice with walks.
The Fillies return to action Thursday at Burlington.
