YATES CENTER — Southern Coffey County High’s girls ran into a proverbial buzz saw Tuesday evening.
The Lady Titans matched up with Sedan High, “one of the most athletic teams we have seen in a while,” head coach Jeff True said.
Sedan took control early, leading 19-8 after one quarter and 31-17 at halftime of their 58-26 victory.
The loss came in the second round of Yates Center’s Wildcat Winter Classic. The Lady Titans (1-2) will wrap up tournament play Friday in the fifth-place game against Altoona-Midway. Tip off will be at 4:45 p.m. in Yates Center High’s east gymnasium.
In boys’ action, SCC rolled to a 62-30 win over Sedan. Details from that contest were unavailable. The Titans will play in the championship game at 8 p.m. Friday at Yates Center’s Norris Gymnasium against an opponent yet to be decided.
“The girls played hard, but we had trouble taking care of the ball,” True said, pointing to SCC’s 28 turnovers. “You just can’t do that and be able to stay close against a good team.”
Breanna Isch scored nine points with 11 rebounds to lead Southern Coffey County. Miranda Alumbaugh followed with seven points. Dalyn Deal had four assists. Brittne Brite pulled down seven rebounds.
Sedan’s Kaiman Smith did most of the damage, scoring 22 points to pace the Blue Devils.
“She was outstanding for them,” True said.
