MELVERN — Southern Coffey County High’s girls came up just short Monday in their bid for their first win of the season.
The Lady Titans missed on a pair of last-second 3-point attempts in a 30-27 loss to Veritas Christian High out of Lawrence in the first round of the Marais des Cygnes Valley Tip-off Classic.
The setback drops SCC into the consolation bracket, where it will take on the loser of the Hartford-Bishop Seabury matchup.
The Lady Titans held a 20-18 lead deep into the third quarter before Veritas junior Rachael Gaspers drilled a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to push the Eagles ahead, 21-20.
The game was knotted at 24-24 with 3½ minutes left before Rachael Gaspers scored twice on layups and Nicole Gaspers added a bucket to put Veritas ahead by six.
Kennedy Gunlock’s 3-pointer with 30 seconds left, followed by a bad pass turnover by Veritas, gave SCC a final chance. But the two treys bounced harmlessly off the rim, the second as time expired.
Karley Ohl was Southern Coffey County’s main offensive catalyst with 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Emily Ludolph followed with eight points, AnnMarie Smith had four and Gunlock three. Smith also had three steals.
