HUMBOLDT — Opening Kansas Class 2-1A, District 1 play on homecoming night didn’t turn out well for Humboldt High’s Cubs.
The Cubs are in the toughest 2-1A district in Kansas with three of the top ranked teams in the state in it.
The Cubs were unable to handle second-ranked Oswego High’s Indians Friday night. The Indians ran the ball, amassing 439 yards, in a 58-13 win.
“We started out pretty well. They drive into our territory and we hold them on a fourth-down play,” said Mike Miller, Humboldt head coach.
“But we had to punt and the blocked the punt, picked it up and returned it for a touchdown. That took the wind out of our sails.”
Oswego went on a 30-point run in the first quarter and got up 36-0 before Humboldt answered back.
Jock Wilson capped a Cub drive with a seven-yard touchdown run with 7:46 left in the second quarter. Hayden Boring kicked the extra point.
By intermission, the Indians held a 52-7 advantage scoring on two more runs and a blocked punt for a safety.
Neither team scored in the third quarter. Oswego added a touchdown to lead 58-7.
Derrick McCall scampered 15 yards for a touchdown as time expired. McCall led the Cubs with 66 yards rushing on 14 carries. He was 6 of 18 passing for 75 yards.
Plus McCall was Humboldt’s leading tackler with 13 stops. Boring had two fumble recoveries.
Boring had nine yards on four carries and Wilson had three yards on 13 carries.
“The game was won up front and they were more physical than we are. We just didn’t match up well with them,” Miller said.
Miller said the Cubs will go play a junior varsity game Monday then get back to work with the full squad Tuesday.
Humboldt (0-5) goes to Lyndon next Friday. Lyndon (4-1) lost to third-ranked Olpe (5-0) 32-7 Friday night.
Gavin Betzen, a member of the Cubs’ squad, and Taylor Fitzmaurce were crowned 2010 Humboldt High’s fall homecoming king and queen Friday.
