EMPORIA — No undefeated championship this week but the Sonic Blast had an impressive run to the championship of Mike’s Sporting Goods Summer Slam.
Sonic Blast, an 18-and-under girls’ fast pitch softball team, defeated the Renegades 4-1 in the 18-and-under championship game Sunday in Emporia. The Blast went 5-1 in the weekend tournament.
Lenzie Boring and Melissa Davidson pitched for Sonic Blast. Boring was 3-1 including the win in the championship game. Davidson was 2-0 on the mound.
In the championship contest, Megan Dillow had two doubles. Kylie Taylor and Taylyn Wells each singled.
Sonic Blast started the tournament with a 13-1 blowout of High Rollers. Davidson got the win.
Jenna Sigg had two singles and Boring had two doubles. Kelci Owens had a single and a double while Taylor had two doubles and a single. Hannah McCall connected for three singles. Wells had a single and a double and Davidson singled.
Next came the only speed bump of the weekend, a 1-0 loss to Emporia Energy. Boring pitched. Boring, Sigg and Davidson each had two singles. Dillow and Callie Umholtz each had a base hit.
Sonic Blast wrapped up Saturday’s pool play with a 9-0 win over Renegades with Boring pitching. A single each by Taylor and Owens were the only hits in the game for Sonic Blast. The team took advantage of 11 free passes to the bases issued by Renegade pitching.
In Sunday’s bracket play, Sonic Blast opened with a 15-1 win over Red Sox. It took just three innings behind Davidson’s pitching.
All 15 runs came in the first inning. Boring had a triple and a single in the game while Owens had three singles. McCall had a single and double as did Davidson.
Wells tripled and Sigg doubled. Umholtz singled.
Sonic Blast advanced to the title game after defeating Salt City Crush 8-1. Boring got the pitching win.
Sigg, Dillow and Boring each had two singles. Hitting a single each were Umholtz, Taylor, Owens, Kayla Johnston and Wells.
