WICHITA — Yates Center’s track and field team competed in the Pre-State Challenge in Wichita on Saturday and came away with several top-five finishers — including an individual champion — and set a new school record.

The school record came in the 2000-meter steeple chase. The Wildcats had never had an athlete attempt the event in competition so Brett Holloway’s fourth-place finish in 6:55 will go down in the school record book.

They earned their first-place finisher in the 3200-meter run where Hadley Splechter continued his stellar freshman campaign. He finished the race with a time of 10:23.

Splechter also took a second-place finish in the 1600-meter run.

Levi Cooper took second in the 200-meter dash and the relay team of Mikey Bruner, Jordan Smith, Holloway and Splechter took second in the 4×800.

Makayla Jones was the top finisher on the girls side of the action, earning a second-place mark in the discus.
