COLONY — The Crest Lancers made a strong first impression in the Three Rivers League after opening the season with a 19-4, 17-6 sweep of the St. Paul Indians.
After wrapping up their home opener with a pair of mercy-rule victories, Coach Roland Weir likes what he sees so far.
“We got a lot of things to work on and, defensively, we’re still putting some of the pieces of the puzzle together,” Coach Weir said.
“Our pitchers did a fine job and our hitters hit the ball when they needed to.”
Senior pitcher Drake Weir handled double-duty Monday as the Lancers’ leader on the mound and in the batter’s box.
Along with tallying six strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings, Weir also drove in a team-leading five RBIs, including a triple.
“I just tried to stay loose, stay free, take my warmup seriously and tried to compete,” said Drake Weir, who credited his fast start to offseason preparation.
“I was hitting in the cage and off the tee a lot. I was just trying to put it in play. Offseason work was what it was.”
Weir got the Lancers going with an RBI single in the opening frame, followed by a two-RBI double from senior catcher Jensen Barker.
Crest continued pouring on the runs with RBI doubles from sophomore third base man Will Disbrow and senior outfielder Henry White.
More RBIs from Crest sophomore shortstop Kole Walter and senior designated hitter Dalton Kersley put the Lancers firmly in the driver’s seat.
