Allen Community College’s Kinsey Stuewe lived out an athlete’s dream scenario Thursday.
Bottom of the last inning.
Bases loaded.
Home team trailing by three.
Stuewe finished off the storybook ending in style, blasting a grand slam home run to lift the Red Devil softball team to a stunning 9-8 win over Kansas City, Kan.
The fun ended there, however.
Allen pitcher Skyler Jackson exited the second game early after being hit by a line drive as KCK rebounded with a 13-1 victory.
The split puts Allen’s record at 10-18 headed into a doubleheader today in Parsons against Labette.
Allen trailed, 8-5, going into the bottom of the seventh inning before Haley Gedrose singled with one out. Hailee Lundine followed with a walk, and Mikayla Long’s ground ball to third was misplayed for an error, loading the bases for Stuewe.
Stuewe quickly fell behind, 0-2, fouled off another pitch and then worked the count to 2-2.
She was ready for the seventh pitch of the at bat, lifting the ball up into the jetstream-force wind out of the northeast, clearing the fence and giving ACC the wild victory.
The same contingent also played a role in Allen’s first rally of the game.
Kansas City broke out to a 3-0 lead after half an inning, before a two-out error off of Lundine’s bat gave ACC a glimpse of life in the bottom of the third.
Long immediately made the Blue Devils play, blasting a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence to cut Allen’s deficit to 3-2.
Stuewe was hit by a pitch before Alayna Brown smacked an RBI double to right to tie the score. Madelynn Collins was next with an RBI single to push Allen ahead, 4-3.
But Kansas City rallied to retake the lead, 6-4, in the top of the fourth on a two-out rally.
