The Iola volleyball team wrapped up the 2017 season on Saturday at the 4A sub-state tournament in Burlington.
The Fillies were the fourth seed and played the one seed and host Burlington, falling in straight sets (25-16, 25-20).
The Lady Wildcats went on to win the sub-state tournament, beating Girard 2-0.
“We knew it would be a fight,” head coach Emily Hampton said. “We knew Burlington was a tough, tough team and we were going to have to play 100 percent the entire time just to have a chance. Our goal was to fight, fight as much as we could and see what happened. Burlington pulled it out but we fought until the very end which is what I wanted to achieve. We wanted to make them earn it.”
Set one saw Burlington get out to an early lead and hold onto it as the Fillies fell 25-16.
Junior Piper Moore had three kills to lead the way for Iola while senior Colbi Riley had two. The Fillies couldn’t get anything past the Lady Wildcats from the serving line, recording zero aces in the set.
Iola also did not record a block in the first set.
The second set saw a lot more fight from the Fillies when they were able to claw back from an early setback. The girls brought the score within two points on two separate occasions late in the set.
It wouldn’t be enough,   though, and Iola’s season ended with the 25-20 loss.
Moore once again led the way for the Fillies in kills with three while junior Shaylee Sutterby had two. Sutterby also had the only block of the match for Iola.
The Fillies end their season with a 9-19 record.
